What Is eVent® Fabric? The Science Behind Better Breathability
A jacket can be completely waterproof and still leave you feeling damp. Here's how eVent® approaches breathability differently, and why it matters on the mountain.
Waterproof Doesn't Always Mean Comfortable
When you're skiing or snowboarding, your body produces heat and moisture. If that moisture can't escape, it builds up inside your jacket, leaving your layers feeling damp even when no snow has gotten in.
That's why breathability matters just as much as waterproofing. Your outerwear needs to protect you from the elements while allowing excess moisture to escape.
What Is eVent® Fabric?
eVent® is a high-performance waterproof and breathable fabric technology designed for demanding outdoor conditions.
Its signature innovation is Direct Venting™ Technology, which uses an air-permeable waterproof membrane to help moisture vapour escape while blocking rain and snow.
Instead of focusing solely on keeping water out, eVent® is engineered to help you stay more comfortable when you're working hard.
How Does Direct Venting™ Technology Work?
Traditional eVent® Direct Venting™ membranes contain microscopic pores that resist liquid water while allowing moisture vapour to move outward.
The Science Behind the Breathability
Some traditional waterproof membranes use a continuous polyurethane (PU) coating that moisture vapour must diffuse through.
Traditional eVent® Direct Venting™ avoids coating over its membrane pores, allowing the structure to remain air-permeable.
Why does that matter? Moisture vapour has a more direct route out, helping manage heat and humidity during activity.
eVent® vs. GORE-TEX®: What's the Difference?
Both technologies are designed to keep water out while allowing moisture vapour to escape. The key difference is how particular membrane constructions manage that moisture.
eVent®
Traditional Direct Venting™ uses an air-permeable membrane with open microscopic pores.
Moisture vapour can move directly through the membrane, without a continuous PU coating over its pores.
Designed for high breathability during active movement.
GORE-TEX®
Uses various waterproof-breathable membrane constructions, including traditional ePTFE and newer ePE.
Some constructions use a PU component through which moisture vapour diffuses.
Performance depends on the particular fabric and laminate.
Is eVent® More Breathable?
It can be. Traditional Direct Venting™ has an air-permeable structure that can offer advantages over certain PU-coated membranes.
But not every GORE-TEX® fabric uses the same construction, so the actual difference depends on the specific materials and testing.
What Does This Mean on the Mountain?
Picture hiking to a powder stash, working up a sweat, then stopping at the top in freezing temperatures.
If your jacket traps that moisture, your base layers can become damp. As your activity drops, you may start to feel cold.
Breathable outerwear helps release that moisture before it builds up. Combined with proper layering and ventilation, it helps you manage changing conditions throughout the day.
